2b COURIER-POST, Saturday, October 10, 1967 OBITUARIES Clare Boothe Luce, 84, author, former congresswoman, diplomat 4-; I sftt 4 i if WASHINGTON (AP) Friends of Clare Boothe Luce remembered her fondly as a woman who advocated her conv ersative views forcefully and cheerfully right up to the end. She died yesterday of cancer at age 84, two days after lapsing into a coma. "Clare was a conservative intellectual who blazed a trail through the mythology of the left," said Arnaud de Fiorchgrave, editor of the conservative Washington Times, of which Mrs. Luce was a board member. "She was one of the most extraordinary personalities cf our century," said De Borchgrave, who met Mrs.

Luce in Paris in 1950. Mrs. Luce was a writer, editor, congresswoman and diplomat who used her husband's wealth and power and her own brains and beauty to become one of the century's most influential women. She was the widow of Time Inc. founder Henry R.

Luce. Mrs. Luce was on speaking terms with every president from Franklin D. Roosevelt, whom she criticized, to Ronald Reagan, whom she admired. Roosevelt, she once said, "lied us into war." Reagan, she said last year, "returned the United States to a sense of strength and solidarity, and forward progress." In a statement from the White House, Reagan saluted Mrs.

Luce as "a woman who was constantly expanding the boundaries of what a woman could do. "Nancy and I knew Mrs. Luce as a woman of generosity, charm, forcefulness, and a point not always noted gentleness," the president said. "Her Roman Catholic faith was central to her life and thought. And always, there washer concern for the nation." She was elected to the best-dressed list as well as Congress, and was known as much for her good brain as her good looks.

Active into her 80s, Mrs. Luce was a member of Reagan's Foreign Intelligence Advisory Board, a panel designed to assess American foreign intelligence abroad. Mrs. Luce was born in New York City on April 10, 1903. Her parents separated when she was young, and her mother took her to Paris for a year.

She later attended private schools in New York. In 1923 she married George T. Brokaw and divorced him six years later. Their only child, Ann Clare Brokaw, was killed in an automobile accident in 1944. Mrs.

Luce joined Vogue magazine in 1930 and served as managing editor of Vanity Fair in 1933 and 1934. In 1935, she married Luce, who started Time and Fortune magazines and a weekly magazine with pictures that his bride had envisioned Life. Three of her plays appeared on Broadway, most notably "The which had an all-female cast, ran for 657 performances and was adapted for film. In 1940, Mrs. Luce traveled to Europe as a journalist under contract to Life and from her experiences wrote the book, "Europe in the Spring," an account of the 1940 German offensive.

But she did not pursue writing. She turned to politics, working in the presidential campaign of Republican nominee Wendell Willkie in 1940, and then ran for Congress herself in 1942, winning despite a Democratic landslide. The only woman member of the House Military Affairs Committee, she was a frequent visitor to the World War II front. At home, she supported civil liberties for blacks. I Writer, envoy dies Clare Boothe Luce, with husband and Time- photo, died yesterday of cancer in Washing-Life Inc.
