Palmer Sets Pace With 130 in Texas SAN ANTONIO, Tex. (UPI) Arnold Palmer, who can be deadly with about any stick in the bag and has a reputation of coming from behind, found himself 3 strokes in the lead today as the Texas Open Golf Tournament's third round started. The muscular Pennsylvanian concocted a brilliant 8-under-par 31-32-63 Friday for a 130 at the halfway point and a comfortable cushion over the 133 owned by young Al Geiberger of Santa Barbara, Calif. Geiberger had a 32-33-65 Friday. The 31-year-old Ligonier, product's round was in his words, "my best in over a year from tee to and marked his best competitive round since a 62 in January in 1959 in the final round of the Thunderbird Open.

He has had four 65s in 1951 while winning some $35,000. Palmer hit every green, was putting for birdies on every hole, and had his short irons working with such precision he left himself only one long potential birdie putt-a 30-footer which he missed on No. 13. He collected four birdies on putts of 8, 4, 4 and 8 feet, 2-putted a pair of par-5 holes for two more birds and curled in a 25-footer for an eagle on still another par-5. He missed only two rather short birdie putts, both 7-footers as he used up, ironically, 31 putts despite his sparkling score.

In contrast to his opening-round 67, Palmer said he didn't do much experimenting Friday as he took a firm sight on the goal of becoming the first back-to-back Texas Open champ since Wild Bill Melhorn did it three decades ago.
