And while his band catapulted such stars as Bobby Nichols on trumpet and lead trombonist Ray Conniff to fame of their own, his bands always featured vocals by the conductor himself. Compared to Vallee In the '40s he was compared to Rudy Vallee as a romantic band leader with many female fans and hot-selling records. His musicians often joined in the singing, and along with his own solos, Monroe featured the Murphy Sisters and the Moonmaids, among other groups.

When the Dorseys and other bands declined, Monroe managed to hang on until the end of the decade, probably due largely to his accent on singing and his own personal draw. In 1950, with the new medium of television growing, NBC gave Monroe his own show. There were also some film parts, mostly Westerns such as "Singing Guns," the "Toughest Gun in Arizona," and "Meet the People." Shore Cops Continue Picketing By ROBERT MAREK Courier-Post Staff AVALON Off-duty policemen from this city's 18-man force continued to picket at city hall and roads leading from the mainland today to dramatize demands for higher salaries. Members of the 18-man force were joined by supporters from other police departments and their wives as they seek their first contract. Truck drivers from at least two unions were honoring the police picket lines by turning away at access roads yesterday. Larry Dalton, president of Policemen's Benevolent Association Local 59, of which A a 1 policemen are members, said, "So far the city has offered about $7,300 a year for a rookie patrolman and about $9,300 a year as the top salary for a patrolman, over a five-year period," Dalton said. New Contract Commissioner Robert E.

Bruce, the city's director of public safety, said, "We thought we had an agreement on a new contract Feb. 10. However, later that same day, the pact was turned down by three of the four PBA negotiators." Dalton said the police are asking for an immediate across the board salary increase of about 25 per cent for all members of the department in addition to a more comprehensive hospitalization plan for their first contract. Currently rookie patrolmen earn $6,396 a year, according to the city's salary ordinance, and are paid $8,250 a year after five years on the force. No New Talks Dalton said the negotiations, which began 13 months ago, broke off last Wednesday and that no new bargaining sessions had been scheduled.

Bruce claims each time PBA negotiators sit down at the bargaining table, their wage demands go up. "I feel the police should have an increase but it should be within reason," Bruce said. Access Roads Yesterday about 25 to 30 off-duty policemen and members of the Policemen's Wives Association picketed city hall and access roads leading to the island city from the mainland. However, all police services were maintained as police reported for regular shifts and Dalton said there were no plans for the city's police to stage a work stoppage.
