The bleeding disorder affecting 20,000 U.S. males "is on everybody's short list" of diseases that might be cured by replacing defective genes, says Dr. Frederick Rickles of the University of Connecticut School of Medicine in Storm Experts here for a World Federation of Hemophilia meeting say top scientists will meet within months to solidify gene research plans. One reason for optimism: Much is already known about the genes that produce inadequate blood-clotting proteins. But Rickles says researchers will face serious obstacles.

(AP) Lew DeWitt, the Statler Brothers tenor and guitarist for more than 18 years, died today at home, his business manager said. He was 52. Mr. DeWitt, who suffered from regional enteritis, or Crohn's disease, said life on the road "was miserable at times." At one point, his weight dropped from 213 pounds to 119 pounds.

The Statlers were "kicking around, singing gospel" when they met Cash in nearby Roanoke in 1964, Mr. DeWitt once recalled. "He saw something different in us something we could do to make more money." The Statlers converted to country music, and Cash put the group in his show. "We had two flop records before we made it big," Mr. DeWitt said.

Mr. Lewallen was born in Mount Holly and lived in Camden before moving to Levittown 30 years ago. He was employed as a truck driver for Precision Heat and Treatment Company, Southampton, for many years before illness forced him to leave in 1982. Ser-vices will be held tomorrow for Carrie Glasgow Snaidman, a former Haddonfield resident who died Saturday at Saunders House here. She was 98. Mrs. Snaidman was a longtime Haddonfield resident before moving to Bala Cynwyd to live with her daughter 11 years ago. Mrs. Snaidman was the widow of George E. Tiller, 78, AUDUBON A memorial service for George E. Tiller, who died of lung cancer last Saturday at his home here, will be held Saturday at Logan Memorial Presbyterian Church, Audubon. Mr.

Tiller, 78, was a retired statistician with Pulverizing Services, formerly of Moorestown.
