NEW YORK (AP) Ben Grauer, a pioneer NBC radio announcer who was hailed as one of the greatest of all time, died Tuesday in his sleep, after suffering a major heart attack. He would have been 69 on Thursday.

Grauer was admitted to New York University Medical Center for treatment of a heart ailment and suffered a major coronary attack last weekend. He was believed to be responding to treatment, but was found dead in bed at 8:30 a.m. A versatile radio and television reporter, Grauer's range of coverage included such divergent events as the Berkshire Music Festival and the 1948 Israeli-Arab war. He joined the National Broadcasting Co. in 1930 when the network was only four years old.

Grauer retired May 30, 1973. "Ben Grauer was a man of quality in everything he did both professionally and personally," said the NBC board chairman, Julian Goodman, in a statement. "His name was synonymous with the reporting of live events in the early and exciting days of both radio and television. All of us will miss him." A native New Yorker, Benjamin Franklin Grauer who was probably best known for his coverage of New Year's Eve from Times Square, started out in show business at the age of seven, as a child actor on the Broadway stage and in movies. In 1918, he had a role in 'Penrod" with a young actress named Helen Hayes.

Giving up the stage to resume his education, Grauer won top speaking honors as an undergraduate at City College of New York. After graduation, Grauer started a rare book department in his father's antique shop. But the $6-a-week income from the venture cost him his enthusiasm in that field. In 1930 he auditioned for NBC, and his career was under way Millions of radio listeners and later TV viewers heard Grauer's voice from blimps, helicopters, telephon booths, diving bells, and network studios in the ensuing 43 years. His coverage spanned almost every conceivable special event and news story.

With John Cameron Swayze, Grauer gave the first live television BEN GRAUER coverage of the national political conventions in 1948. At a press confernce there with New York Gov. Thomas Dewey Grauer noticed that the GOP presi dential candidate looked "beardy" "I whipped out a stick of makeup it on him, "Grauer later recalled. "One of his aides objected, saying that he'd look too feminine with makeup. Times have changed.

Taking part in the first live TV coverage of a national election the same year, Grauer said he was on the air for 15 hours. "We chalked up the returns on a blackboard as they came in," he said "No computers or calculators." Covering the Morro Castle fire In 1934, Grauer grabbed the first survivor from the burning ship to come ashore at Asbury Park, N.J. He recalled: "I offered him $10 or $15 for an interview. Then he and I squeezed into a telephone booth in the Spring Lake hotel, called the control room in New York, had them reverse the call so that I wouldn't have to keep feeding money, and was patched into the network with the interview." Grauer embellished his reputation with his coverage of such news events as the Lindbergh kidnaping, the maiden voyage of the dirigible Akron, and a wide variety of sports and entertainment features. "The customer in the bar at the time of our anaylsis would have inhaled the same amount of the carcinogenic DMN in one hour as a smoker who inhales nine to .16 nonfilter cigarettes or 17 to 35 filter cigarettes," the scientists said. They added, however, that inhaling smoky air is not the same as smoking.

A smoker takes a large quantity of smoke into the lungs, while a nonsmoker breathes through the nasal passage, which is capable of filtering out many components. Dr. Ernst Wynder, head of the institute's parent organization, the American Health Foundation, said the findings point up the need for special studies of workers constantly exposed to smoke-filled atmospheres. "Retrospective studies have not shown a relationship between such exposure and lung cancer," Wynder said, "but our technique may not have been refined enough."
