5C COURIER-POST, Fridiy, Novtmbor 25, 19M Youths' suicide tape tells of drug, dating woes OBITUARY Mary Small, 94, Baptist congregant results of drug tests would not be available for several days. "This has really traumatized the community said Fred Shipman, a psychologist at the 940-stu-dent Quakertown Senior High School. He said "a lot of kids" had come to the district's seven counselors to express concern about the deaths. The faculty and staff met for several hours yesterday to talk about ways of dealing with the trauma, Shipman said. "We hope we can get as many of the facts as possible so that we can use this to helpothers," he said.

"Perhaps some good might still come out of it." According to family members, the two boys met at Quakertown High, where Ferdock was a junior and Landis a senior, and had become close friends last summer, primarily because of their love of rock music. "All we know is that they were last seen at nine o'clock Friday (night), that a friend dropped them of near thequarry and that they died sometime before 11:30 Saturday the spokesman said. Neither family had heard the tape as of yesterday, but both requested that its contents be kept confidential. The police spokesman, citing the families' wishes, refused tocomment further on the tape. But the spokesman said the tape showed that "one had just brokon up with a girl and both had drug problems." County Coroner Thomas J.

Rosko said an autopsy conducted by assistant Philadelphia medical examiner Dr. Halbert Fillinger showed the youths died instantly of multiple internal injuries. Chief Deputy Coroner John Moyer said there was no evidence the boys had been drinking, and Associated Press QUAKERTOWN, Pa. A two-hour tape recording left behind by two teen-age boys who jumped to their deaths in a quarry indicated the youths felt suicide was the only solution to their drug and dating problems, police said. The deaths of Marc Landis, 17, of Richland-town and Daniel Ferdock, 1 Quakertown last Friday or early Saturday left the boys' high school classmates traumatized and their parents puzzled, authorities said Monday.

A cassette that a friend of the dead youths removed from the quarry but later turned over to authorities "was a two-hour suicide note," said one investigator. "It's leaving a lot of people angry and confused." Landis, the son of a Lutheran minister, and Ferdock. the son of a school teachcrrfell 200 feet i' to their deaths after camping at a quarry in the nearby Bucks County town of Perkasie, police said. The.Rev, D. Craig Landis, pastor of St.

John's Lutheran Church in Richlandtown, said that he had considered his son's problems merely "the growing-up problems that teen-agers have." He said his son had moved out and was living with a Michael Ferdock, a teacher in the Souderton district in Montgomery County, said, "I know my son, and my wife and I say he did not commit suicide." An unidentified friend of the youths found the bodies Saturday morning. It took rescuers using ropes four hours to climb 85 feet above the watery base of the quarry and recover the bodies, A spokesman for the East Rockhill Township force, who asked not to be identified, said he didn't know when the tape was made. Garden State victimized by home-grown myths riages for every 1,000 residents in 1980, compared to 10.9 weddings for every 1,000 people across the country, ranking New Jersey 50th in the nation. There were 13.2 births for every 1,000 residents, compared to 15.9 new babies nationwide, making New Jersey 47th in the nation. And New Jersey ranks 44th in the divorce rate, with 3.5 divorces for every 1 ,000 residents, compared to 5.3 per 1,000 residents nationwide.

Hughes said that the state ranks low in those categories because New Jersey residents between the ages of 25 and 35 when people marry, have children and get divorced are leaving the state. "People are graduating from high schools in New Jersey, move out to go to college and marry elsewhere," she said. "New Jerseyans are not marrying their childhood sweethearts or thegirl next door unless they go to school together." New Jerseyans are also not energy wasteful. The state ranks 38th in the amount of energy consumed by each resident. But they rank 20th in the percentage of residents with air conditioners.

The information comes jrom the data center, which was created by former Go. Brendan T. Byrne in February 1 980 todistribute U.S. Census Bureau data collected in 1980. "It's a whold mish-mash of different types of data." said Connie Hughes, director of the data center.

"It sort of answers every question you get in a bar. We do get calls from people asking for 'information who say they have a bet going. We hope we're more useful than that." There are some disturbing facts. Hughes said the. statistics show that many residents leave New Jersey to marry and bear children elsewhere, but return' for retirement, a trend reflected in the birth, marriage and death statis- people left New Jersey to attend college than came to the state for school, Hughes said.

But, she said, people apparently come to New Jersey to retire. The median age of New Jersey's population is the second highest in the country 32.2 years compared to 30 years for the country. It ranks 18th in the percentage of residents 65 years or older, with 11.7 percent of the population that age or older, compared to 11.3 percent nationwide. The state's ranking for the death rate is the same -1 8th percent with 8.9 deaths per 1 ,000 population compared to 8.5 deaths nationwide. Thestatealso ranks 1 5th in the crime rate, with 6.180 crimes per 1 00,000 residents, compared to 5,800 nationwide.

But New Jersey ranks 37th in the number of federal and state prisoners, with 92 inmates per 100,000 residents, compared to 153 prisoners for every 100,000 residents across the country. By TOM ROSENTHAL Associated Press NEWARK A "whole mish-mash" of data compiled by the State Data Center shows that many mythsabouttheGardenStateare just that, officials say. For example, despite massive rush-hour traffic jams that clog some state roads, New Jersey ranks only 44th in the nation in the number of motor vehicles per 1.000 population. There are 661 vehicles for every 1,000 fed to the national average of 713. New Jersey is also thesecond safest state In the country.

It ranks 49 in traffic fatalities, with 23 deaths for every 100,000 licensed drivers, is opposed to the national average of 35 falali-, ties. And New Jersey ranks 35th in the country in the number of people who drive to work, with 82.7 percent riding in cars, trucks or vans, com-, pared to 84.1 percent nationwide.
