COURIER-POST, Friday, March 5, 1993 5d Camden Catholic caBfares Div. A title Swimming However Immaculate Heart, which dropped to 13-1, kept chipping away and closed the gap to 50-44 when Amy Canes-trino and Jessica Winfield went 1-2 in the 100 freestyle. Catholic expected to pull away after the 500 freestyle, but was only able to increase the margin to 59-51. "I thought we'd sweep the 500," said Sexton, who won the 500, with Beth Mayo taking third. "We didn't realize that they had such good girls in that event.

We were really surprised at that point." Sexton refused to buckle under the pressure, rallying on the final leg of the next event the 200 free relay to bring Catholic home a winner and push the score to 67-57. "I was nervous waiting for my leg," said Sexton, who also won the 200 free. "Coach (Mike) Parker told us we had to win the 200 free. I hit the water in second place and knew I had to kick as hard as I could. Open and South Jersey Coaches Invitational championships.

"This is an extraordinary group of girls," said Parker, whose club has complied a 31-1 record during the span. "They've met every challenge. We knew Immaculate Heart would be a difficult team. I predicted the meet and had us winning by 20 points. We had a discussion on the bus coming up to the meet and went over what everyone had to do.

The girls knew what they were up against. "They moved some people around to prevent us from sweeping the 200 and 500 freestyles, but it hurt them in the 200 IM where Gwen Mayo and Natalie Wolfinger went 1-2, and the backstroke. This was a team effort tonight, but if I had to pinpoint any one performance, I'd have to say Dawn's 200 free relay leg and 200 freestyle win were big races for us." By BOB CABNET Courier-Post Staff EWING As Camden Catholic High School's Mandy Burke stood on the starting block waiting to swim the 100-yard breaststroke at the State girls' Division A championship meet on Thursday at Trenton State College, all she was thinking about was doing her best. Burke's effort was good for fourth place and the clinching points as Camden Catholic went on to top stubborn Immaculate Heart 94-76 for the Division A title. Going into the breaststroke, Catholic held a 78-62 lead and needed eight points to secure its third championship in four years.

The Irish got the points when Gwen Mayo clocked a 1:09.60 to win the event and Burke did a 1:13.83 finishing fourth. "I didn't realize until I got out of the pool that we won the meet," said Burke. "I knew Gwen would win I was just trying I went all out to the wall. "It feels great to finish out what we started as freshman. Being a senior makes this championship more exciting." Ann Czemiakowski, Natalie Wolfinger and Kathy Rotter followed with a 1-2-5 finish in the 100 backstroke, setting the stage for Gwen Mayo and Burke.

"I knew it was important for us to do well in the backstroke and I was just trying to keep up with Ann," said Natalie Wolfinger. "This was the most competitive meet we've had all year. Once the meet was over we really got excited. I think winning the title this year is more exciting that the other two. It's nice ending your career with a championship." The meet closed out a remarkable four-year period for the Irish that included three state titles and four National Catholic High School, South Jersey League to do my best and get the most points I could for the team.

When one of the parents told us we had won the meet, we got psyched up for the 400 free relay." Catholic forged the final score when Beth Mayo, Natalie Wolfinger, Dawn Sexton and Gwen Mayo combined to win the 400 free relay in 3:48.01. The Irish, which finished the season undefeated at 13-0, appeared in control early in the meet, holding a 37-25 lead after the 50 freestyle which was won by Kelly O'Connell swimming in an outside lane. "I feel more confident being on the outside," said O'Connell. "I was very focused and wanted to get out fast. I don't think anybody saw me out there.

After the 50 though, things started to get nerve Ft I I I I I I i I Lancers hold off Indians to capture league title 5-2 Hockey By MARK HATOFF Courier-Post Staff VOORHEES Freshman centers Ken Goetz and Hugh McGee each scored a pair of goals and sophomore Rob Pacitti collected two assists, as the Lancers defeated the Indians 5-2, in the inaugural South Jersey High School Ice Hockey League champi- onship Thursday night at the Coliseum. The six-team league is independent of any connection with the New Jersey State Athletic Association or the high schools. The victory capped an improbable season-ending run for the Lancers, 11-7-0, who won their last six games. The club, which skated to a fourth-place finish during the regular season, had to top the first-place Renegades and the second-place Indians in the playoffs to claim the title. "I'm really excited for the kids," said Lancers' coach Bill Silk.

"They worked hard all year and they did it without some key players for most of the season. "This was a terrific neighborhood rivalry. I've known (Indians' coach) George Borgos and his family for years." Goetz scored the first goal, off assists from Pacitti and freshman defenseman Chris Holland, on the power play at 2 minutes, 9 seconds of the first period. McGee was credited with a goal at 10:44 of the first period when an its last nine contests.

"We had to mix and match early in the season because of all our injuries, but the rest of the team just sucked it up. "We have no seniors and only three juniors on the team, so I'm really looking forward to the years to come." Junior center Jack Jobes scored an unassisted goal for the Indians and senior captain Mike Borgos added a goal early in the third period to cut the Indians' deficit to 4-2. Bob Semtimphelter had the Lancers' fourth goal and McGee ended the scoring with an empty-net tally. "We wanted to start hitting from the start and bottle them up," said Goetz. "Once we took advantage of those early penalties, we wanted to keep the pressure on." "We tried to keep their strong-side center and left winger in the zone," said Silk.

"Our goal coming in was containing their weak side." The Lancers' kept the puck in the offensive zone and continued to pepper the net. The Indians' deficit could have been worse if not for the acrobatic goaltending of Berger, who made 26 saves. "We peaked at the right time," said Silk, whose team won eight of Indian defender inadvertantly deflected the puck past goaltender Jon Berger. The goal made the score 2-0 after one period. Pacitti fed Goetz again at the 58-second mark of the second, on a power play that had carried over from the opening period.

That made the score 3-0. "The coach kept Ken, Hugh and me together on the same line from the first day of practice," said Pacitti. "We got to know each other really well that way." Another key for the Lancers during the game was tight checking that seemed to disrupt the flow of the Indians' rush up ice. Local Scoreboard H.S. Basketball Boys' 500 free 1.

9 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily. Call 227-7539. Dennis Smith Delran High School Delran High School wrestling coach Dennis Smith hao a combined case of optimism and caution as the 1992-93 season began.

Smith knew he had several outstanding wrestlers back, but he was also aware there were several weight classes where the experience level was pretty lean. Smith's concerns proved to be unfounded, as the Bears rolled to a 16-3 record and won the Burlington County League Patriot Division for the second straight year. "We were optimistic, but I wasn't sure if we could reach the same level as last year because we didn't feel we had the balance throughout the lineup," said Smith. "We were a little Inexperienced In some weights but the kids in those weights kids like freshmen Joe Zuccarelll and Jim DeMaise, our 103-pound tandem, and Kurk Fullerton at 130 really came through for us in a big way. "Also, we pretty much got what we expected from veterans like Greg Harrison, 23-1, Brett Matter, 26-0, Josh Lashley, 24-0, and Bill Duff, 26- 0, and we got more than we expected from sophomore Scott Hamlet, 23-2.

Those guys were a combined 112-3." Like most successful coaches, Smith knows producing a championship-caliber team is not something he can do by himself. Smith was quick to heap praise on assistants Jim Henion and Steve Mclntyre. "Jim Henion has been Involved In wrestling in this area for upwards of 19 years and he's been my assistant here for five years and Is Invaluable," said Smith. "And Steve Mclntyre wrestled for me before graduating In 1962 and he knows what Is required to get the job done." Delran missed the playoffs this past season, partly due to the fact they suffered three losses while, wrestling an ambitious schedule. But that's Smith's way, and he plans to continue wrestling the best.

"We were disappointed in not making the playoffs and it bothered us for a while," said Smith. "But we bounced back in the districts, and the kids are right on schedule as we enter the region and state competition. "We wrestle the best competition we can for the kids, and we're going to continue that. It prepares them individually, and that's really the most important Crystal Robinson mean mcdtkm 15, Aramaro 2, E. Jones 5.
