Associated Press NEW YORK LeeStrasberg, the veteran actor and drama teacher known for promoting "method acting" whose students included such stars as Marlon Brando and James Dean, died today of a heart He was 80. Strasberg, who had appeared Sunday in the "Night of 100 Stars" production at Radio City Music Hall, was stricken at 6:30 a.m.

at his apartment on Central Park West. He was pronounced dead at Roosevelt Hospital at 7:56 a.m., according to his spokesman, John Springer. At the hospital were his wife, Anna; his actress daughter, Susan; his grown son, John, and his young sons, David, 1 1, and Adam, 12. Actor Al Pacino, another of the many stars who had studied at Strasberg's renowned Actor's Studio, also was present Strasberg took over as artistic director of the Actor's Studio in 1948 and his students over the years represent a roll call of the best known performers of the screen and theater. A November 1980 awards dinner of the studio honored 128 of Strasberg's graduates who had received been nominated for Hollywood Oscars, Broadway Tonys or television Emmys.

Martino, teacher, musician PENNSAUKEN Funeral services for Lawrence R. Martino, a local teacher and musician, will be 10 a.m. tomorrow at St. Peter's Church, Maple Avenue, Merchantville. Mr.

Martino, 70, died Thursday at John F. Kennedy Medical Center, Cherry Hill Division. A Pennsauken resident and a teacher for more than 20 years in the Camden system, Mr. Martino taught at the Fetters and Mickle Street schools. He was also a freelance musician for 40 years, performing with such groups as the Johnny Austin, Tommy Darrow and Jonathan orchestras.

He was a member of Local 595 of the American Federation of Musicians. Mr. Martino is survived by his wife, Mary; a daughter, Maryanne Wiener of Collingswood; a son, Lawrence of Pennsauken; two sisters, Jennie Paradise of Stratford and Catherine Kingkiner of Mystic Island; and four grandchildren. Associated Press ENGLEWCOD Thelonious Monk, 61, a jazz innovator, pianist and composer, died early today after suffering a stroke on Feb. 5, according to an official at Eng-lewood Hospital here. "The Monk is dead," said a hospital spokesman who asked that his name not be used.

The spokesman said Monk died at 8:10 a.m. today. Monk had been hospitalized since he suffered a stroke 12 days ago. Assistant hospital administrator August J. Wiesner had said yesterday that Monk's condition had been "very grave" since the stroke.

Monk was one of a few jazz players, before World War II, who worked on the harmonic and rhythmic innovations that led to the new jazz style, bebop.
