"V- I -4 ,4 I 'It By WENDY GORDON REISMAN For the Courier-Post Joseph Dilmore sure knows how to put the "long distance" in a long distance relationship. In fact, Joe "reached out and touched" (emotionally, anyway) his girlfriend, Jennifer Ubry, from the other side cf the world. The result? Jennifer and Joseph were married on Saturday, March 16. Why did Dilmore, a Navy Damage Controller, Third Class stationed in Sasebo, Japan on the USS Brunswick utilize "Ma Bell" to propose marriage? "I originally wanted to propose by mail," says Joe. "Unfortunately, the ship was deployed, and I couldn't get any mail out, so a phone call was the only way I could propose to Jen." Dilmore went on to say that he planned the entire proposal with his parents so they could capture the moment on videotape for later viewing.

"My parents pretended to be working on their video equipment when I called, so Jen had no idea what was about to occur. I understand that she was pretty shocked," says Joe. "I asked her to marry me, and she sounded pretty calm, but she cried when she hung up. I'm glad I got to see it all on the video tape. It was almost like I was there." The next problem was how to get a ring on Jennifer's finger when she was in New Jersey and Joe was in the Land of the Rising Sun.

"I really wanted to get a ring and send it home for my Mom to give her," says Joe. "Because of my deployment circumstances, I had to have Jen pick out the ring. I told her to get a nice big one." Once there is a proposal and a ring, the wedding arrangements need to be made. Again, long distance was "the next best thing to being there" most of the time. Joe was deployed to Cambodia for an MIA salvage operation while the nuptial plans were being made.

"We recovered over 115 bones and a bunch of artifacts on our mission," says Joe. "The bones will have to go through DNA testing for positive identification. Being involved in this was a personal milestone for me. "The only problem was there was no mail or telephoning for about three weeks. Most of the arrangements were made, and then when I could finally get to a phone, I was told what was happening.

Most of it was great. I only made some minor adjustments." Joe got back into town on Sunday, March 9. Of course, Jen was glad to see him, especially with the ceremony so close at hand. What Jen didn't know was the best was yet to come. The wedding was planned for March 16.

Shortly before, Joe and Jen went to Charlie Brown's in Maple Shade, the site of their first date. "On our first date, I took her to the restaurant and gave her a bouquet of a half a dozen roses," explains Joe. "She was really embarrassed. I promised her that I wouldn't embarrass her this time." That wasn't quite the truth. Not only did Joe have those blush-producing roses on hand, but there were more surprises for Jen as well.

"I kept telling Jen about this new dessert that Charlie MARY LILLIE KEITH TURNER CHRISTINE SHIPE MICHAEL LEO MR. AND MRS. JOSEPH DILMORE Brown's had. I told her I couldn't remember what it was called, but it was some kind of cake. I kept dropping hints like, save room for dessert," says Joe.

"We ordered, ate our dinner, and when it was dessert time, I mentioned to the waiter that we wanted that special new cake dessert." The dessert certainly was special. Joe had called ahead and not only had those infamous roses waiting, but also a cake prepared with the words "Will you marry me" boldly emblazoned on the top. "I had to distract her when they were bringing it out," says Joe. "I held her hand and asked her, 'How much do you love "A lot," she answered. "Why?" When Jen looked up, there were about 12 people surrounding the table, and Joe was on one knee.

"I had to make the proposal official," says Dilmore. Other restaurant patrons asked the obvious question, a resounding, "Did she say yes?" Jennifer's answer was equally obvious. "I said yes six months ago!" The next time Joe and Jen were hand in hand was at the Maple Shade Congregational Church. The answer was again affirmative. This time it was "I do." Joe went to sea again.

The difference: Jennifer joined him, and it was a honeymoon, not a deployment. The ship was different too; not a battleship, but the Big Red Boat. And the ocean was not the Pacific, but the Caribbean. In mid-April, Joe will be going overseas on the USS Belleau Wood. Jen will be traveling abroad with him.

Who knows? Maybe she'll surprise him with a half a dozen roses and a cake before he sets sail. Perhaps this time, their phone bills won't be too high. singer, to Robert Edward DeMer-curio, son of Mr. Salvatore De-Mercurio of Detroit, and Mrs. Elizabeth Watson of Sagi IS "'V Si.
