Art Museum Associated Press ALLENTOWN, Pa. Philip I. Berman, longtime chairman of the Philadelphia Art Museum and a generous friend to many other artistic and educational institutions, has died after a long battle with cancer. Mr. Berman, 82, built his fortune in the family trucking business and traveled the world to build his collection of painting and sculpture.

He died Wednesday night at his home in Allentown. He joined the museum's Board of Trustees in 1980, and at the time of his death, he was chairman emeritus. Mr. Berman and his wife, Muriel, amassed a renowned and eclectic art collection. Paintings by such artists as Rembrandt, Chagall, James Wilson Peale, Mary Cassatt, Toulouse-Lautrec, Robert Rauschenberg and Susan Rothenberg hang in their home.

Over the last third of a century, the Bermans donated more than 50,000 works of art, including more than 45,000 to the Philadelphia Museum of Art, one of the largest gifts in the museum's history. And they placed sculptures in museums, universities and colleges in Philadelphia and around the world. The Bermans gave $1 million to Ursinus College in 1989, and the school turned the former student union building into the Philip and Muriel Berman Museum of Art. It now houses 1,500 works of art donated by the couple. He was a life fellow of the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts.

In 1968, he was named the first American underwriting member of Lloyd's of London. Also active in civic affairs, 1 he was the chairman of the board of Allentown's redevelopment authority for 10 years. He had a longstanding interest in higher education, serving on the State College University Board, which oversees 14 state universities in Pennsylvania, and the boards of Hebrew University and the International Center of University Teaching of Jewish Civilization, both based in Jerusalem. He also served on the boards of Kutztown University, Cedar Crest College, Lehigh University, Lehigh Community College, the University of Pennsylvania, Rutgers University and Notre Dame, In 1968, having retired from the trucking business as a multimillionaire, he took over the already profitable Hess's department store in Allentown. Ten years later, he sold it after expanding it to 14 stores doing an annual business of more than $150 million.

Mr. Berman was chairman of the Pe: nsylvania Public Television Network Commission from 1970 to 1995. He helped found WLVT-TV, Channel 39, the Lehigh Valley public television channel, and served as its president for four years.
