She joined Putnam Berkley in 1976 and became the company's CEO in 1991. Putnam Berkley merged with Penguin USA five years later.

She left Penguin in 2001, citing a "difference of business philosophies" and soon became vice president of Random House of which Doubleday is an imprint. Hired by Random House CEC Peter Olson, a longtime friend, she was widely believed to be bored in the job and left within months. Over the past couple of years she has taught at the Columbia University's business school and has served on the advisory board of a private equity firm. Associated Press Former Penguin Putnam head Phyllis Grann, who establish such best-selling authors as Tom Clancy and Amy Tan, has joined the Doubleday Broadway Publishing Group as a senior editor. "Phyllis Grann's track record as an astute, intelligent and wildly successful editor speaks for itself," Doubleday publisher Stephen Rubin said this week.

Among the industry's most respected executives, Grann won't have the kind of power she had at Penguin, where she was CEO from 1996 to 2001. But Rubin said she wanted to get back to editing and let others worry about running the business.
