Not many teams managed to escape unscathed. Four to be exact. Going into Friday night, only Shawnee, West Deptford, Florence and Schalick were still perfect. Perhaps the weirdest day of the entire year surfaced on Thanksgiving Day three overtime games, including a pair that went three overtimes.

And all in the same conference. It can't come any weirder than three overtimes to decide a football game. But two on the same day. Wow! Maybe it was that the seniors just didn't want to see their careers end. Ironically, in regular-season games like both of them were if a winner doesn't surface in three Group Records Friday's games not Included League Overall Pt 'Paulaboro 5 0 0 10 9 2 0 Woodbury 4 1 0 8 5 5 0 Gateway 3 2 0 6 4 6 0 Audubon 1 4 0 2 4 6 0 Haddon Twp.

Here come the Eagles No, not the Philadelphia Ea-. gles, nor even the West Deptford Eagles. But how about the Paul VI Eagles? Coach John Doherty and his staff have done an excellent job resurrecting the school's program. The team finished 5-5 and had Camden Catholic on the ropes in their traditional Turkey Day battle, leading the Irish 21-12 late in the first half. Then Paul VI became its own worst enemy, fumbling four times during a 12-minute span and finding three of the miscues being turned into touchdowns by the opportunistic Irish.

Freshman quarterback Mark Lucarini gave another sparkling performance for Catholic, completing 13 of 19 passes for 240 yards and three touchdowns. Sean Scanlon, who suffered a broken hand in the Camden game, started at quarterback for Catholic but reinjured his hand and had to leave the game. Scanlon, a junior with a great college future, suffered a much more devastating loss last week when his father died after suffering a massive heart attack. Only in the playoffs do the teams continue until a winner emerges. One of those overtimes involved Audubon and Haddon Township, a game that most observers believed belonged to the Green Wave on a pregame basis.

Audubon, a solid 4-5 team prior to the game, could have finished 5-5 with a victory, salvaging a small measure of satisfaction in a season' that produced more late-in-the-game defeats than coach Ralph Schiavo would care to remember. The Green Wave, which played all its games on the road this season due to construction and renovation of the athletic program's playing fields, couldn't stop Haddon Township's Kamil Jackson on either side of the ball. He scored all the Hawks' touchdowns and blocked an attempted field goal that could have given Audubon the victory in the second overtime. Haddonlield edged Haddon Heights in the other triple overtime thriller 20-14 and it, too, was guided by a player who scored all three touchdowns Zach Romash. Weird again, because Romash, a senior, had scored only one touchdown all season coming into the game.

He most assuredly made up for lost time with a memorable performance. When you see such happenings in a holiday atmosphere, it gives one an idea of the parity in the Colonial Conference once you get past West Deptford. I never thought West Deptford would handle Paulsboro the way it did. Nobody, no time, no place has handled the Red Raiders like that in modern memory. The third overtime game on Thanksgiving Day found Mainland edging Egg Harbor Township 34-33 on Chris Malick's placement in the first posses Coaches Wanted Camden Catholic High School is seeking a head varsity boys' lacrosse coach.
