N.J. Lic. No. 4007 856-629-5291 CARSON, Sr. James Richard "Rich" Of Spring, Texas passed away at home on November 12, 2004 at the age of 69 years surrounded by his family and friends after a courageous battle with ALS and cancer.

Rich was a graduate of Drexel University in Civil Engineering. He ployed asem engineer with the DuPont Company for 30 years. CHIEF ROY CRAZY HORSE (aka Nemattanew, Roy Johnson, Reds) born on December in Chief Roy Crazy was Horse, Camden, New Jersey to the late Charles H.

Johnson a and Anna Schmidt Johnson. was the youngest of eight children. He departed this life on Thursday November 11, 2004. The Chief was too young to serve in World War II, but that did not stop him. exaggerated his age to enlist with his older friends and family served in the U.S.

Army during World in South, Pacif- received an Honorable Discharge in 1945. After his service, Roy Crazy Horse returned to school and completed his high school education. He then attended Temple University and La Salle College. At the age of 22, he eloped to wed his loving and dedicated wife, Idell Mathias (18 yrs. of age), in Elkton, MD on April 11, 1947.

Three children, Guy, Gia and Gig, were born from this union which spanned 57 years. Other surviving family members include a sister, Anne (Rhodelle) and brotherin-law Charles Campbell, sister-in-law Dr. Lottie Johnson, and cousins, nieces and nephews. Roy Crazy Horse was chief among chiefs and an inspirational and respected leader of people. passionately defended the identity and rights of his people of the Powhatan Renape Nation, as well as the rights of others.

He was insistent on respecting all peoples and dealt with integrity with all whom he met. It was his love for his people that provided the energy for his many activities. He was a man proud of his nation and was a vocal advocate for his nation as well as other Native Americans. He was known and respected by the leaders of many tribes from South and Central America as well as the United States and Canada. He spent many years working toward dispelling many of the myths and stereotypes associated with Indian people.

He distinguished himself as a leader and role model for the Powhatan Renape Nation and worked unceasingly to educate his own people and others about the rich cultural heritage of the Powhatan Renape Nation as well as other Native Americans. He accomplished this goal through his writings, lectures, research and lobbying activities. Chief Crazy Horse was seen in the company of mayors, governors, presidents, movie stars and the King of Sweden. Chief Crazy Horse was an avid learner whose thirst for knowledge was never quenched. He never let a question pass without wanting to understand it.

The Chief also taught in the Indian Studies department of Rowan State College as well as lecturing in various colleges and universities throughout the Middle Atlantic States, including Harvard University, University of Pennsylvania, Stockton State College, Rowan and Rutgers Universities. Chief Crazy Horse also spoke to the subcommittee on Indian Education before the U.S. Congress and before the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Commerative Commission.

In October of 2001 his contributions were acknowledged by Thomas Edison State College, which bestowed upon him an Honorary Doctorate Degree. This degree acknowledged his contributions not only to the Powhatan Nation but to society in general. Until recently, Roy Crazy Horse was the Executive Administrative Director of the Powhatan Indians of Delaware Valley, New Jersey as well as the Executive Director of the Coalition of Eastern Native Americans in Washington, D.C.. Chief Crazy Horse was an advisor and developer of numerous projects related to Native American affairs including the development of the first NJ Indian Family Counseling Service, an advisor to the Pennsylvania Native American Cultural Center, founder of the New Jersey Native American Cultural Center. He also assisted the Smithsonian Institute in the Development of four volumes on North American Indians.

Chief Crazy Horse was a member of numerous boards and committees, including chairperson of the NJ American Indian Commission, the National Indian Health Committee and the NJ Governor's Ethnic Committee, serving under Governors Whitman, Florio and Kean. His many articles include Christopher Columbus and the Powhatan Religion. He coauthored and co edited a handbook on Native American Studies and NJ Indian Education. In 1995, he received the American Indian Film and Video Award from the Oklahoma State Arts Council. Chief Crazy Horse is the author of "Morrisville, A Hidden Native OBITUARIES Community," "Holocaust of the memorial contributions to American and "North Queen of Heaven Church.

'He played semiprofessional football, semi professional baseball and softball which earned him a place in the South Jersey Fast Pitch Softball Hall of Fame, boxed and was a middle weight champion in the Army and served as the Chief Inspector for the New Jersey Athletic Boxing Commission, was recruited to run track in recreational college and was an avid swimmer, bowler and golfer. Chief Crazy Horse will also be remembered for his many contributions to the Powhatan Renape Nation, especially his long pursued of the Rankokus Reservation. He worked hard to achieve this dream, which was realized in 1974.

He rubbed the earth into his veins, made the land his mother and his responsibility. Rankokus Reservation would have never happened for the Powhatan Renape Nation had Chief Roy Crazy Horse not pursued this dream. As he moved along he built a nation. He now continues his journey alone but leaves a nation to carry on his work. Besides being lovingly remembered by his family and numerous friends, he will be remembered as well as for his kindness and generosity both inside and outside the Indian Community.

The Celebration of Chief Roy Crazy Horse's life will be held on Sunday, Nov. 21, 2004, at the Rankokas Indian Reservation in Rancocas, NJ. (609-261-4747). In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Powhatan Renape Nation, P.O. Box 225, Rancocas, NJ 08073-0225.

He was a WWII Army Veteran serving in Central Europe and Germany from June 10, 1942 until his Honorable Discharge in October 18, 1945.
