LOVE MISSY CARDS OF THANKS THE family of the late Gilbert R. Upshaw, Sr. wishes to extend their deep appreciation to everyone for their many acts of kindness during their hours of sorrow. May God bless and keep you in his care and increase the measure of faith. The Upshaw Family 2 arrested in raid on temple in Newark of Associated Press 1 NEWARK A raid on the basement temple of a local religious sect uncovered several human body parts and the remains of several animals who may have been sacrificed by worshippers.

A father and son 1 were arraigned Tuesday afternoon in Central Judicial Processing Court in Newark, charged with possession of stolen property and desecration of human remains, said Lt. Derek Glenn of the Newark police. The remains, including three skulls, were found Monday in caldrons set up on altars in building owned by Eddie Figueroa, 56. Figueroa, who authorities believe is a high priest in the Palo Mayombe sect, and his son, Eddie Figueroa 35, were being held Tuesday in the Essex County Jail. The two were charged after more than a dozen city police officers and FBI agents entered the three-story building around 8 a.m.

Authorities found the animal remains later in the day when they dug up the rear yard of the building, but no more human remains were discovered. It was the second time in two months that Newark authorities have recovered stolen body parts from worshippers of the sect, whose priests use human remains in their rituals. The raid grew out of an investigation that began in July, when some remains were stolen from a crypt at Mount Pleasant Cemetery in Newark. Palo Mayombe is a derivative of Bakongo, a West African religion that slaves brought to Cuba in the 19th century. It was taken to the United States by Cuban immigrants who have arrived within the past few decades.

While most Palo Mayombe worshippers do not steal human remains, members of the local sect prey on aboveground crypts, said Dean Maglione, an assistant Essex County prosecutor. He said they usually steal old remains that are little more than bones. "We received a number of calls while we were prosecuting (another theft) case," Maglione said in a published report. "There is obviously a lot of this going on and it's of great concern to us." Ex-lawyer admits guilt, faces prison Courier-Post Staff CAMDEN Disbarred Cherry Hill lawyer Stuart B. Donegan, 36, pleaded guilty Tuesday to misapplication of clients' funds he had obtained to resolve bankruptcy proceedings.

Donegan, who now lives in Philadelphia, had offices on West Ormond Avenue in Cherry Hill. He previously lived on Prince Henry Court in Marlton. A plea agreement between Assistant Camden County Prosecutor Mark Chase and Donegan ends a 16-month investigation into the case by the Camden County Prosecutor's Office and the New Jersey Lawyer's Fund for Client Protection. That fund has paid $187,713 to about 40 clients whose funds Donegan misappropriated between January 1998 and May 2001. Last summer, the New Jersey Supreme Court revoked Donegan's license to practice law.

Under Donegan's guilty plea, he could be sentenced to six years in prison and must make restitution. If he can pay "a substantial amount" toward that restitution by the time of his March 15 sentencing hearing, the state prison term would be reduced to four years. Donegan remains free on $100,000 bail pending sentencing..
